GML Lines operates a small number of services such as G8 and the Pasir Gudang route and formerly G1 too, which is from Larkin -> Senai Airport. From 1st Jan 09, GML Line ammended the G1 route to become A1 instead, operating under buses with the Senai Airport Line livery and extending the route to provide a direct link from Senai Airport to the shopping area of Permas Jaya (via Larkin). Pontian Liner operates 2 routes namely 606 and 616 (to the best of my knowledge) and 606 runs from Pontian to Kukup while Ekspress 616 runs from Pontian to Larkin. ]]> Tue Jan 27 2009 Farewell Tribute: SBS Transit's 2 Bendies - SBS998Y & SBS999U http://sbs3758d.fotopic.net/c1644378.html This collection serves as a tribute to the two exclusive articulated buses previously owned by SBS. These were taken in 2005 and admittedly, the photo quality is not exactly stellar. Despite of that, I've decided to upload these photos here for the benefit of all who may be interested. A little bit of background info: Trans Island Bus Services (now SMRT Buses) was the first to bring in an articulated buses into Singapore and the Mercedes O405G were commissioned in early 1996. SBS followed suit, but started off with bringing in a demonstrator of Volvo B10MA make, registered as SBS998Y which was introduced on 26 April, the similar year on Service 18. SBS’s example of SBS998Y was fitted with a three-door Duple Metsec bodywork, similar to the Volvo B10M MK IV from which the articulated chassis was derived. Standing at 19 metres in length, it was Asia’s longest bus compared to the conventional length of 17.5m. In the following year (1997), SBS purchased its second unit of an articulated bus. This time, the Mercedes Benz O405GN was chosen. In addition, the bus came with a never-before seen Volgren CR221 bodywork, in contrast with TIBS’s Hispano-bodied buses. Registered as SBS 999 U, this unit entered service with Bukit Batok Depot on Service 195, between Marina Centre and Commonwealth Avenue. A few years later, it was transferred to Bedok North Depot to join SBS 998 Y on Service 18. Both were subsequently redeployed to feeder route 290 from Tampines and both rejoined the fleet of Service 18 again in 2002. SBS Transit no longer purchases articulated buses, having indicated its preference for double-deck buses as they were able to carry more passengers while occupying lesser road space. This was in contrast with SMRT’s stand that articulated buses offer greater accessibility and efficiency. In March 2006, just shy of their 10th year in service, both of SBS Transit’s articulated buses were removed from service and sold to Bayes (New Zealand) to be used as school buses. They were originally non air-conditioned but were later fitted with Hispacold air-conditioning units. More often than not, the bus body has a high tendency of vibrating violently when idle and the air-condition of the these buses disappoints when one sits near the rear end of the bus. Amidst passengers' complaints and other factors taken into consideration, these buses are scheduled for early withdrawal by end 2009. However, having said that, the public transport system that is in place there do not consist of the conventional rigid buses that are commonplace in Singapore and Malaysia. Instead, the iconic transportation mode would be the minibuses known as 'Sudako' and the motorised trishaw look-a-like which is called the 'Becaks'. Though the minibuses (or the sudako) may appear to be small, there are uncounted companies accounting for the myriad of mini-buses on the roads and one can easily find one of these running on the streets. These minibuses are from van or car chassis; such as Toyota Kijang, Daihatsu Hijet, Mitsubishi Colt/Canter, Isuzu and many more. Owing to the many various companies operating these buses, they are often painted in varied liveries and hence the sedakos running on the roads make up for quite a colourful fleet and are not as mundane as first perceived. Herein are samplings of the sudakos and becaks that can be easily found in the streets of Medan/Berastagi, which makes it quite a colourful collection to have. Despite the many complaints from the public, these buses will be best remembered for the speedy rides and the sturdy Fuji Heavy Industries bodywork. Personally, it is because of the retro-looking bodywork itself that draws me to adore these buses! The farewell tour took place on 6th Dec 08 and 2 UDs were chartered, one OAC (Original Air-con) and CAC (Converted A/C). The route started from Lor 1 Geylang and stopped over at Fort Rd Heavy Veh Pk. Afterwhich, it plied several sectors of the former CSS routes such as 603 and 605, such as Armenian St and Balmoral Rd, just to name a few. It works on the basis of a 'hop on hop off' scheme whereby passengers/tourists will pay RM5.00 for a day pass to tour the various historical sites which the route will serve. Besides the 2 Double Decker buses (MCW Metrobus and Leyland Atlantean), another bus service under Panorama Melaka which operates single decker MAN SL262, takes passengers to outskirts of Melaka. For the single deck Blue route, it costs RM 2.00 per person for a day fare, you one can go to places such as Melaka Sentral, Melaka library, Melaka Hospital etc. The MCW Metrobus, LAT505V is an MCW Metrobus that was new to Kingston Upon Hull City Transport. The red on the Metrobus is CitySightseeing livery as it operated in various UK locations as a Sightseeing bus. Background info from Windy. It is now registered as MBM1957 and plies the Red Line of the Hop-On-Hop-Off route in Malacca. The lower saloon is also retrofitted with an air-conditioned unit. SBS8030L made its debut appearance on the roads on 10 Jan 2008, on Service 174 & FastForward 174e which Soon Lee Bus Park deployed on. This bus was previously at Hougang Depot awaiting to be deployed on Service 62 but in view of optimising resources in having both demonstartors 8030L and 8033D (Scania K230UB) at the same depot, it was hence transferred to Soon Lee. This bus was and still belongs to Volvo, with the Volvo badge prominently affixed in the interior of the bus, one at the front and the other at the extreme rear. It is believed to be on trial for 1 year and it awaits further decisions made by the top management of SBS Transit. SBS8030L has a Volvo B7RLE chassis with a Volve D7E engine and coupled with a ZF 6HP502 transmission gearbox. The bodywork of this bus is by Soon Chow Corporation, sporting the trademark bumper front of a Soon Chow bodywork. Some have jokingly nicknamed this bus a "Transformer" with a devil-looking front. The airconditioning unit is powered by Denso and the EDS (Electronic Display System) is by CoolAir. There are 2 air coolers to reduce nitrogen dioxide level in the exhaust air and the air-conditioning is powered by Sutrak of Germany. This design of combining the compressor and evaporator into a single unit above the rear engine proved to be effective as it saved cabin space.
